I wish that there was some special formula for healing people but some things we can only be left up to God. Prayer and Meditation will help your friend to become more accepting of his condition and therefore it should be more tolerable for him. Teach him to visualize the colors and to verbalize the three word meditations and at the very least he should be more at peace with himself.
